The Government of India has designated Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital as a Research Unit.
Sankar Foundation Eye Hospital and Institute, a renowned super specialty eye hospital in North Andhra Pradesh, has been designated as a Research Unit by the Government of India, which has bestowed the prestigious designation of a ‘Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO)’.
The recognition allows the hospital to promote or encourage scientific research activities in ophthalmic science, as well as receive administrative support for research activities from the Department of Science and Industrial Research, which is part of the union Ministry of Science and Technology. The award is valid for three years, from 2022 to 2025.
KBN Manimala, Managing Trustee and Group CEO of Sankar Foundation, expressed his delight at the recognition and stated that Sankar Foundation had initiated measures to improve research facilities at the hospital. “We can take up Government and CSIR projects directly with this recognition. Under the leadership of Dr T Raveendra, Dr Birendra Biswal, Dr Anil Kumar, and Geetha Pavani, the hospital’s R&D department is working to achieve this goal by utilising technological advancements in Ophthalmology. “Our hospital has performed nearly four lakh eye surgeries to date, with a strong team of 30 doctors performing 68% of them free of charge to the poor and needy,” she said.
