Canada receives a record number of new permanent residents.
The last time Canada welcomed such a large number of newcomers was in 1913, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in a statement on Tuesday.
Ottawa: The Canadian government announced that it would accept 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022 to fill labour shortages, the most ever in a single year in the country’s history.
The last time Canada welcomed such a large number of newcomers was in 1913, according to a statement issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on Tuesday.
“As the government focuses on addressing the acute labour market shortages we face today and building a strong economy for the future, one thing remains certain: immigration is a key part of the solution,” the IRCC statement said, according to Xinhua news agency.
Approximately 5.2 million applications for permanent residence, temporary residence, and citizenship were processed by IRCC in 2022.
According to the statement, this is more than double the number of applications processed in 2021.
Currently, immigration accounts for nearly all of Canada’s labour force growth.
