Kyra Zafp, an American research scholar and handloom expert, was ecstatic after witnessing the work of Sircilla weavers.
Under an American government research grant, Kyra is researching the handloom sector and weavers’ skills in various Asian countries. She visited Sircilla textile town on Monday as part of her study tour after meeting with sericulture farmers in Siddipet.

She enquired about the clothes being weaved on handlooms and their skills by interacting with weavers, in addition to inspecting a few handlooms in town. She also inquired about weavers switching from handlooms to powerlooms. She also met Hariprasad, who gained national attention by weaving the G-20 Summit logo on a single cloth. Kyra was overjoyed after seeing a saree that could fit into a matchbox and stated emphatically that she had never seen such a talented weaver before.
She was also briefed on previous problems encountered by Sircilla weavers and the steps taken by the State government to rescue the weaving industry from the crisis. She was also briefed on how weavers improved their skills and how powerlooms were modernised.
She was overjoyed to learn how the weavers are overcoming the crisis and becoming self-sufficient.
She will visit the weaving industries in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh, in addition to Pochampalli and Gadwal in the state.
Guduri Praveen Kumar, Chairman of the Textile Corporation, Jindam Kala, Municipal Chairperson, Sagar, District Handlooms and Textiles Officer, and others were present.
