The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has strongly opposed the Election Commission of India’s proposal for remote EVMs (RVMs), which would allow domestic migrants to vote remotely in elections held in their home States or constituencies. The party will submit its position to the ECI in writing by January 30 and will raise its objections after internal discussions.
After attending an ECI meeting with opposition parties in Delhi on Monday, BRS leader and Telangana State Planning Board vice-chairman B Vinod Kumar stated that the BRS was opposed to the use of RVMs in elections because India did not require it.
“People are concerned about the operation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and the possibility of hacking. The ECI had not addressed these concerns. “How could anyone believe in the sanctity of these RVMs under these circumstances?” he wondered.
Vinod Kumar also stated that, due to the anomalies, several developed countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, had discontinued the use of EVMs in elections. He emphasised that numerous cases of bank account hacking were reported on a regular basis, and that there was no guarantee that the EVMs or RVMs could not be hacked or tampered with.
“Under these circumstancees, we cannot trust the votes cast in the name of a person living abroad. “There is no guarantee that the said voter is voting remotely or that those votes were obtained through hacking,” he added.
