Each new year ushers in new trends in health, technology, climate, the economy, politics, fashion, and many other areas. UKNow is looking ahead to 2023 by asking University of Kentucky experts to predict and discuss upcoming trends in their respective fields.
Scarlett Wesley, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Retailing and Tourism Management in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, shares her predictions for 2023 fashion trends.
What influences fashion trends each year, according to UKNow?
Wesley: At the moment, social media has the most influence on fashion trends. Someone on social media can literally overnight gain a large following, and brands are taking advantage of working with these influencers to reach audiences. However, as inflation rises, we will see a slight decrease in spending. As a result, thrifting clothing will become more popular, and people will be encouraged to restyle their closets.
UKNow: Do you have any fashion predictions for 2023?
Wesley: Brown will remain popular as a neutral colour. Pinks will dominate, ranging from soft baby pinks to strong burgundy and maroon hues. Wide leg pants will remain popular as we transition to a more oversized silhouette in 2023. I believe that 2023 will be a year when people will use fashion to express themselves more than ever before. People are choosing what works for them and incorporating those fashion choices, regardless of what appears trendy.
UKNow: Which decade do you believe had the most influence on 2022 fashion trends?
Wesley: Without a doubt, the 1990s and early 2000s. Elements from these eras have been reinterpreted in order to appeal to today’s media-savvy consumer.
UKNow: What trends from previous years/decades have you seen return this year?
Wesley: Fashions from the 1990s and early 2000s are making a comeback, including the popularity of flannel shirts, low rise jeans, and mini skirts, as well as tailored pieces like vests.
