President Droupadi Murmu selected former SC Judge Justice S. Abdul Nazeer as Governor of AP while appointing the current Chhattisgarh Governor, Harichandan Viswabhushan.
Amaravati: On Sunday, President Droupadi Murmu named former Supreme Court Justice S. Abdul Nazeer as the new governor of Andhra Pradesh, while the previous governor, Harichandan Viswabhushan, was moved and named the new governor of Chhattisgarh.
Judge Justice Nazeer participated in the decision of the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid controversy (part of the unanimous verdict allowing construction of Ram Mandir at the disputed place).
Additionally, he contributed to significant rulings in the triple talaq, demonetisation, and KS Puttaswamy cases, which affirmed the right to privacy as a basic right (led the Constitution Bench which upheld the note-ban decision as valid). He also served as the chair of the Constitution Bench, which ruled that ministers and lawmakers cannot be subjected to any extra limits on their right to free expression that are not included in Article 19(2).
On January 4, Justice Nazeer stepped down.
He was raised in Beluvai/Moodbidri and received his B.Com degree from Mahaveera College, Moodbidri. He was born into a Muslim family from the Kanara area of Karnataka. Later, he graduated with a law degree from Mangaluru’s SDM Law College, Kodialbail.
