The government announced a vacation for students in Class I through Class VII for today, Friday, and tomorrow after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipated “very heavy rainfall” in several areas of Goa and issued a “red” alert for that day (Saturday).

IMD Goa has issued a “red” alert for July 8 and a “orange” warning for July 7, 9, and 10. The state’s average rainfall was the highest of the season as of today, according to the met department, which stated all stations had recorded Very Heavy rainfall and one station, Sanguem, had recorded Extremely Heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in South Goa’s Sanguem and Cancona. Cancona had 213.8 mm of rain in the previous 24 hours while Sanguem received 233.4 mm.

Shailesh R. Sinai Zingde, director of education, stated in a circular released on Thursday: “In view of the Red Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department, Goa centre predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and extremely heavy rainfall over the two districts and keeping in mind the safety of young children in elementary schools, it is decided by the competent authority to declare holiday on July 8 and 9, 2022 for the students from Stad I to VII in the state of. However, pupils in grades IX and X will continue to attend regular lessons.

“There is a red warning issued for tomorrow,” Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated on Thursday. Our emergency response team is fully prepared. People must also exercise prudence. Never leave your house without a good cause. For pupils in Classes I through VII, it has been proclaimed a holiday. The class IX and X curricula are crucial.

Minister of Women’s and Children’s Affairs According to Vishwajit Rane, the director of women’s and children’s development was also directed to keep the state’s anganwadis closed for the next two days. “In order to maintain safety, the Director of @dcwdgoa has been instructed to proclaim a two-day holiday at all Anganwadis in response to the IMD’s severe rainfall warning of our children,” he tweeted.

On Friday morning, the IMD reported seeing moderate to heavy rain in both North and South Goa. “Rain-bearing clouds are moving in from the Arabian Sea and are visible over the regions of North and South Goa. In its 7 a.m. update, the IMD stated that most locations in the North Goa and South Goa districts, including Panaji, “are most likely to see intermittent Moderate to Heavy rainfall periods during next 3 hours.”

It said that lengthy rains might occur in steep ghat regions, remote areas, and severe rain periods were also possible.
“Necessary orders have been issued to the Disaster Management Authorities in the State to activate the field machinery for taking preventive measures and to confront any scenario coming out of heavy rains,” the Goa government said in a statement. Additionally, it has been recommended that people travel around flooded regions and refrain from staying near unstable trees, structures, or locations prone to landslides or rock falls.

Over the next five days, Goa might get more rain as a result of a possible intensification of the cyclonic circulation over the South West and adjacent west central Bay of Bengal, according to IMD, Goa. It further said that a growing pressure gradient, winds along the west coast, and an offshore trough that extends at mean sea level from south Maharashtra to north Kerala coast may all contribute to heavier rainfall.
