While three MLC seats under the MLAs quota and one Teachers constituency MLC seat will be vacant by March 29, the terms of two Governor’s quota seats and one Local Bodies constituency MLC seat will expire at the end of May.

Hyderabad: With seven seats in the State Legislative Council set to become vacant by the end of May, Telangana is set to hold new elections before the State Assembly elections later this year. While three MLC seats under the MLAs quota and one Teachers constituency MLC seat will be vacant by March 29, the terms of two Governor’s quota seats and one Local Bodies constituency MLC seat will expire at the end of May.

Under the MLAs quota, the terms of K Naveen Kumar, Gangadhar Goud, and Elimineti Krishna Reddy will expire on March 29, as will that of Teachers constituency MLC K Janardhan Reddy. The terms of Governor’s quota MLCs Farooq Hussain and D Rajeshwar Rao, as well as AIMIM MLC under Local Bodies constituency Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri, will expire at the end of May.

Given its strong presence in the State Legislative Assembly for the MLCs quota and the Governor’s quota seats, the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi is expected to maintain its leadership by retaining five MLC seats. According to sources, it is likely to back the PRTU (Private Recognised Teachers Union) candidate for the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahabubnagar Teachers constituency elections and the AIMIM candidate for the Hyderabad Local Bodies constituency election. While the PRTU has already declared Chennakeshava Reddy as its candidate, AIMIM is expected to keep Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri as its candidate for the Hyderabad Local Bodies constituency.

According to sources, the BRS leadership is eager to give new aspirants a chance in at least two seats under the MLA quota and the Governor’s quota. Among the aspirants are Chief Minister’s OSD Deshapathi Srinivas, former Council Chairman V Swamy Goud, and former MLA Boodida Bikshmaiah Goud. Dasoju Sravan, the leader of the BRS, and former MLC Prof K Nageshwar are also said to be in the running for MLC seats. It has been learned that at least one of the party’s general secretaries will be included in the final list.
