The Kerala Story, a divisive movie starring actress Adah Sharma, began its second week on Friday, May 12. The Sudipto Sen film earned 12.50 crore on day 8 to bring its total box office receipts to 93.86 crore, indicating that it is still having a successful run.
The Kerala Story, starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani, was directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. The film received controversy for suggesting that 32,000 girls from Kerala state vanished and later joined ISIS, but the creators later removed the claim and referred to the movie in its trailer description as the tale of three women from Kerala.
Adah Sharma, who portrays one of the key characters, has responded to the criticism on Twitter by thanking the “crores” of viewers who have seen the movie and helped it become a global trend in 37 nations. She expressed gratitude to everyone who enjoyed her performance.
“Thank you to the millions of you who will watch our movie; thank you for making it popular and for appreciating my performance. This weekend, the 12th installment of “The Kerala Story” will be released abroad in 37 or more countries, she tweeted.
In response to the tweet, some people praised Sharma for playing the part faithfully while others praised the movie for having the guts to portray reality to the general audience.
In reaction to the criticism, Sharma tweeted that “sometimes the most unlikely person can alter the course of history”.
In West Bengal, the chief minister Mamata Banerjee cited the need to prevent “any incident of hatred and violence” as justification for the ban on the movie’s exhibition.
The Kerala Story still draws crowds and generates discussion despite the ban. It continues to be a hot topic in Indian cinema due to its commercial success and varied spectator responses.
