Bumble’s study provides details on the complexities of contemporary dating in India. As our dating cultures continue to change in India and more single people, particularly women, become more deliberate about who and how they want to date, these details are shared in the report.

Hyderabad: February is the month of love! In order to shed light on how GenZ and millennials in India interpret and express love, well-known dating service Bumble has issued its “Modern Love Report.” Bumble’s study provides details on the complexities of contemporary dating in India. As our dating cultures continue to change in India and more single people, particularly women, become more deliberate about who and how they want to date, these details are shared in the report.

Are Indians romantics?

According to Bumble, Indians are all heart. Gen Z and millennials prefer to romance through grand gestures, candlelight meals, writing love notes, and sending sappy SMS.

While 34% of single Indians think that public displays of affection (PDA) on social media and/or on in-person dates are cliché, 42% of single Indians think that constant attention is romantic while just 26% think that it is.

Chivalry: romantic or overdone?

More than 41% of respondents believe that chivalrous deeds are romantic, while just 32% think it is a cliché.

In 2023, how will Indians feel about Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day is overrated, according to 39% of single Indians, yet the same percentage of millennials (52%) and GenZ (33%) want to go on a date this year. This Valentine’s Day, GenZers (35%) are more likely than millennials (28%) to say they do not want to go on a date.

What actually counts at the beginning of a relationship?

According to Bumble’s research, Indians value honesty. In the beginning of a relationship, women in particular want their privacy.

Honesty (49%) and making friends first (43%) are more significant dating criteria in India than prompt text replying (26%).

Nearly 39% of Indian singles want to be upfront about their desires and expectations, and 38% prefer to date a person who is approachable and empathic.

Additionally, 35% of respondents think it’s critical to date someone who shares your values and worldview.

According to 27% of the female respondents, it’s critical for a partner to respect their space and refrain from becoming overly clingy at the beginning of a relationship.

Relationship “end-goals”

People have a variety of ultimate objectives, according to a Bumble research. When dating, over half (49%) of respondents said getting married is their “end objective,” while more than half (53%) of respondents said living together is their “ultimate aim.”

Indians are drawn to intellectual closeness

When it comes to dating, single Indians prioritize their desires for compatibility. As interesting talks are crucial to determining compatibility, intellectual closeness tops the list. In reality, it appears that physical attractiveness is less significant when entering into a committed, long-term relationship.

Age-diverse love

Age gaps in partnerships in India cause observers to speculate and pass judgment on the power dynamics that exist between partners. It’s interesting to see that 38% of unmarried women in 2023 said they feel comfortable dating someone younger (1-5 years). Women are still under pressure to feel a certain way about their age in relationships because of out-of-date cultural conventions. Nearly 2 in 5 unmarried women acknowledge that dating becomes more challenging as one ages.

The greatest challenges women have in modern dating

Finding someone with the same degree of commitment as them, followed by finding someone who has similar lifestyle, values, and views to them (34%) and finding someone their family would approve of, was cited by 36% of women as one of the main dating challenges they encounter.

In fact, 40% of respondents said their friends’ and family’s opinions have an effect on their decision-making when it comes to dating.

People wish to concentrate on disrupting the established quo and old dating conventions in 2023 without surrendering their preferences, demands, or requirements. Women are dating without concern about age differences or judgments, and they prioritize emotional connection above physical needs. As Indian dating customs continue to change, it is exciting to observe some of these good changes, according to Samarpita Samaddar, Bumble’s India Communications Director.
