The Supreme Court issued notices to the Railways and the state government, requesting responses on a number of petitions challenging the high court’s order to remove encroachments.
The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the Uttarakhand High Court’s order to remove encroachments from 29 acres of railway land in Haldwani.
The Supreme Court issued notices to the Railways and the state government, requesting responses on a number of petitions challenging the high court’s order to remove encroachments.
There are 4,365 encroachers on the land, according to the railways.
A bench of justices S K Kaul and A S Oka observed that it is a “human issue” that requires a workable solution.
The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on February 7 by the Supreme Court.
On December 20, last year, the high court ordered the demolition of structures on encroached railway land in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura.
It had ordered that the encroachers be given a week’s notice before the encroachments were demolished.
