Vintage fashion was prominent this year on red carpets and in celebrity paparazzi photos. Whether they were attending a major event or not, Hollywood A-listers made archival fashion feel completely modern, proving that a well-cut design can last a lifetime.
A few celebrities made vintage designs their 2022 signature. Zendaya’s Emmys gown was a black Valentino strapless gown, and she wore a sculptural, strapless Bob Mackie gown in black and teak (from fall 1998) to a Time 100 Gala. Model Bella Hadid is also a big fan of vintage clothing (she’s been known to shop on Depop). She wore a white Tom Ford-era Gucci column gown with a hip cutout and a frothy fall 1986 Chanel gown to the Cannes Film Festival. What do Zendaya and Hadid have in common? Law Roach, who has an eye for vintage finds, styled them both. “Whether it was made in 1920 or 2020,”A great dress is a great dress whether it was made in 1920 or 2020,” Roach told Vogue last month.
Other celebrities were devoted to a specific vintage label. This year, Kylie Jenner, for example, was obsessed with vintage Mugler. She wore a strapless black gown from the designer’s fall 1995 collection, complete with a dramatic headpiece and opera gloves, to the opening of a Mugler retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum last month. Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian had a brief Dolce & Gabbana phase over the summer. Kim delved into the two designers’ back catalogues for bodycon dresses and bodysuits while in Italy for Kourtney’s wedding, when most of the Kardashian family wore the label.
